Awesome Christmas Movie!

I just watched this tonight and was very pleasantly surprised. The cast is engaging, the story a re-telling that will be familiar to most yet not too much, and the execution an entertaining mix of humor and playing-it-straight. I recommend this film!

October TCM Event Was Quite Enjoyable

This afternoon I attended that nationwide event hosted by Turner Classic Movies in AMC theaters. Today was the Frankenstein (1931) and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) double feature and it was well worth it!
I try to see as many of my favorite classics on the big screen as I can find and to see both of these in one sitting was a good score. Bravo, TCM. As well known as these films are, I won't go into the plots here. If you have never seen them, buy them or rent them or Netflix them or whatever, but see them. The main reason? Because you will notice details and catch nuances you have never experienced watching them on home video. This is the main reason I love classics on the big screen and these two films do not disappoint. Seeing a classic on the big screen is always a different viewing experience even if you've watched the same movie at home several times over the years.

What I particularly noticed about these James Whale masterpieces is that the acting is actually better than what it appears to be on the surface. The big screen brings you closer to the actors' faces, especially their eyes, than home video does (even on a big home screen). I caught the subtleties of Colin Clive's and Karloff's performances that I've never really detected completely in a lifetime of seeing these films. What seems quaint to us on the home screen actually plays very well -- like a consciously hip style choice -- on the big screen. Yes, it is just a tad enough more impressive to be (dare I say it?) that much more believable. At least, that much more worthy of letting yourself accept the film's reality. I loved seeing these great horror classic this way they were intended to be seen.

I can't wait to see what TCM has to offer next!

Lovecraft Festival Weekend At Last!

Well, I'll be heading to San Pedro this afternoon! I'm looking forward to the films and the specimens of merchandise and, of course, the camaraderie of weirdos like myself! I will, of course, get photos and post a little report here, after my return.

In the meantime, get yourself a volume of Lovecraft, maybe rent one of the few films based on his work, and check out this preview of a great radio program produced by the HPLHS:

Again At The Lovecraft Film Festival!

My posse and I will be attending the H.P.Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhu Con for a second year. This is one of our replacements for the San Diego Comic Con, which we attended eight years before it finally got far too crowded and way less interesting. The Lovecraft event is much smaller, much more on topic and simply more satisfying to us. We enjoyed last year so much that we couldn't miss it this year -- and to make it an even better weekend, the long awaited US release of Solomon Kane, the film based on HPL's friend Robert E Howard's horror adventure hero opens the day of the festival! We plan to catch a matinee of Kane before the festival opens.

Look for us on Sep 28-30 at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro!

Checking In

Hey all,

I've been very busy editing my film. Had a lot of technical difficulties, ending up getting a new system. I've been pulling long hours to get the first cut done for this Friday's screening for cast and crew.

I will likely have a new official trailer to release this weekend!

Update On Updates

Hey all!

Yes, I know I've been doing the lazy thing lately, posting YouTube links and occasional promos regarding my movie. But that's because I have indeed been busy working on my movie. However, we finished principal photography last weekend and I am now in post production! I'll be in post for a few weeks because I'm hoping to get the film ready for screening at a festival in September, which I'll announce if I get a slot. As publishing and entertainment in general change with our times, what LCL offers will also evolve -- and films are a major part of the brand's future!

A glimpse at the near future of LCL will reveal the following:  Exciting indie feature films and shorts from the film division Lost Amazon Pictures, a new wave of adventure fiction in the LCL catalog, the return of the magazine in special editions, and merchandise celebrating fan pride. I started LCL ten years ago this October and intend to keep the label alive and exciting many more years into the future.

Here are the products coming from LCL/Lost Amazon Pictures in the next few months:

-- Hell's Bells, a short horror adventure original silent movie, for DVD release Christmas 2012
-- A new and original feature length horror film in the tradition of Hammer Horror (title to be announced in a special teaser attached to Hell's Bells), for release to DVD in January 2013
-- House of KA, a brand new novel from Walter Bosley (me) for Kindle and POD release this autumn
-- Lost Continent Library Magazine Anniversary Edition, release date TBD

So, even though activity here has seemed minimal, there is much activity going on to make things more exciting around here! Stay tuned!

Comic Con Report: Looking For Something New

Just making a brief statement regarding Comic Con: We aren't going.

The event has become far too crowded, far too Big LA Media Machine, simply not appealing anymore. My entourage and I are seeking a new event to replace it as our nerd pilgrimage each year, and will again be attending the Lovecraft film festival in San Pedro this year in pursuit of that.

If you have any recommendations on pop culture events we might enjoy here at LCL, let me know!

Tonight At The Egyptian!

I'll be attending a great double feature tonight!

My son and I will be seeing Herk Harvey's masterpiece of B cinema Carnival of Souls and Tod Browning's Freaks the film that was banned for decades. I'm really looking forward to this event as I can't wait to see Harvey's film on the big screen and I have never seen Freaks. Herk Harvey is a major influence on my own filmmaking so tonight is a treat. The screenings are at The Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, tonight at 730PM PST...
